canceled

UPDATED: Sept. 25, 2024

Event Canceled

ASHEBORO, NC – On Friday, September 27, from 9 am to noon at the North Carolina Zoo, Randolph Electric Membership Corporation had planned a public education event showcasing electric vehicles (EVs). As in past years, the event would have taken placed during National Drive Electric Week, which is Sept. 27-Oct. 6, 2024.

This outdoor event, planned during National Drive Electric Week, draws attention to the positive aspects of driving all-electric and plug-in hybrid automobiles.

Because of anticipated adverse weather conditions from Tropical Storm Helene, Randolph EMC and the North Carolina Zoo regrettably must cancel this open-air event.

“It’s unfortunate to have to cancel such a fun opportunity for public engagement,” said REMC’s VP of Member Services and Public Relations Michael Trent. “However, we anticipate heavy rains and wind from Tropical Storm Helene, which is tracking toward our service territory. Randolph Electric is monitoring the storm and stands ready to respond to any potential storm effects.”

Those interested in learning about a special rate for EV owners through the REMC Electric Vehicle Utility Program (REVUP) can find more information on the cooperative’s website.

ASHEBORO, NC – On Friday, September 27, from 9 am to noon at the North Carolina Zoo, Randolph Electric Membership Corporation will sponsor “It’s Electric!” a public education event showcasing electric vehicles (EVs). This outdoor event, planned during National Drive Electric Week, draws attention to the positive aspects of driving all-electric and plug-in hybrid automobiles.

Honorary speakers will welcome the crowd at 10 am. Vehicles from various automobile dealerships, electric school buses, the Zoo’s EV fleet and EV chargers will be on display for REMC members and guests of the Zoo. The first 100 participants will receive a free gift.

“As we see more of our members driving EVs, we want to make sure they have access to helpful information,” said REMC’s CEO Dennis Mabe. “Randolph Electric is dedicated to educating our members about how to power your home, your life and your vehicle.”

At the event, representatives from Randolph EMC will describe how they work with EV owners to evaluate their vehicles’ impact on the electric grid. The REMC Electric Vehicle Utility Program (REVUP) offers members of the cooperative a $500 rebate on a level 2 EV charger for their home. REMC also provides special time-of-use rates that incentivize charging during off-peak hours when energy is less expensive.

“It’s exciting to be part of the ‘It’s Electric’ celebration this year,” said Zoo Director and CEO Pat Simmons. “We welcome the opportunity to introduce our green fleet to visitors and to reinforce our commitment to sustainable practices that reduce our impact on the natural world.”

Randolph Electric and the North Carolina Zoo will team up with national event organizers Plug In America, the Sierra Club, and the Electric Vehicle Association to put on the event in Asheboro. Nissan is the exclusive national automotive sponsor. EV owners who want to showcase their vehicles should register their attendance prior to the event.
